Suitable for all ages but loosely aimed at 5 – 11 year olds

What is intro to Clay? Fun, games and therapeutic approaches through clay, exploration and experimentation with the medium of clay and printing and drawing with it too. Also looking at the theory, history and the understanding of clay as part of nature and a resource directly from the earth. With the opportunity and technical support to develop your own ideas and an option to get what you make fired and keep forever, or for a special gift.

Can we get any items made fired?

Absolutely, we are happy to fire and glaze your items if you you'd like to. This is not essential but if you did wish to follow this process, there would be an additional charge of £2 per item given to the facilitator on the day.

Firing is a process where raw clay get's 'fired' in a big kiln and turns into a ceramic piece, which can then have glazes to colour or change the characteristics of the pot.

The firing process will be linked with The Pottery at Ocean Studios.

What's included within the price?

- Support from specialist facilitator

- A piece of artwork made on the day

- This workshop is suitable for beginner and those who just want to have a play or a refresh

- A chance to learn a new skillset, including historical and natural context to support the creative clay journey

- Materials are included, the facilitators do accept donations for materials on the day

We are an environmentally conscious organisation and encourage our visitors to prioritise green travel. Please consider getting the bus, cycling or walking to visit us. There are plenty of space for bikes within Royal William Yard to and lots of options to utilise public transport. More information on bus routes and car parks nearby can be found here –

If you do need to drive to attend your event then there are lots of pay and display spaces available.

When arriving at Royal William Yard you’ll need to look out for signage to Factory Cooperage, Ocean Studios can be found just a few meters away from the red telephone box situated opposite the Club House. Please enter the building via the courtyard space and through the glass doors.

When leaving the building at night please be respectful and consider residents living nearby.


Ocean Studios has an accessible entrance however some areas are uneven due to heritage restrictions. We have worked hard to create an accessible building, Ocean Studios has accessible toilet facilities and lift access to upper floors. Blue badge parking is available throughout the Royal William Yard – please advise us of any additional needs so we can make your visit enjoyable and comfortable.

Heritage Restrictions
Whilst we work to ensure the building is fully accessible to all, we are limited by the heritage building and land in which we work. The listed building and historic location have certain constraints which unfortunately we cannot avoid or adapt.

Where possible we have improved accessibility however please be aware that areas of Royal William Yard and our buildings has uneven ground and narrow steps with may limit access to wheelchairs and prams.
